Needs vs. Wants

Well, Scott and I have been really talking about Needs vs. Wants lately (in case you hadn't figured that out).  Interestingly enough, this was the topic in my Bible study today.  The study is challenging us as mothers to think about either being a working mother or stay at home mother.  Scripture clearly states the Lord will provide for our every NEED.

2 Corinthians 9:8 ~ And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Philippians 4:9 ~ And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:16 ~ Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

And one of the most powerful passages of all is found in Matthew 6:24 - 34.

When we really think about our needs....we need is some healthy food that meets our body's nutritional demands, not fancy food.  We need a few rooms for shelter, not a huge house filled to the brim with stuff.  We need clothes to cover our nakedness, not tons of outfits with the perfect accessories that are in line with the current trend.  The author questions mothers if their decisions about working/not-working is based on needs or wants?

As you hear about what is going on in Haiti or you reflect on other catastrophes (Hurricane Katrina, Tsunami), do you think it is possible the Lord is trying to get our attention?  Not just about needs and wants but our need for Him!

I thank You, Father, that You supply all my needs.  Purify my heart to know the difference between a need and a desire.  Forgive me for over-indulging myself on the one hand and hoarding on the other.  Speak to me, Lord, in a way I can hear and understand You.
