During Scott's week of shutdown we spent a day with his grandparents, the girls' great-grandparents. Grandpa is 93 years old and as sharp as a tack mentally. Amazing! Grandma's health has declined as she is now bedridden and doesn't recognize anyone but Grandpa. It is sad and Scott's dad has tried to talk Grandpa into putting Grandma in a home but he refuses. He sacrifically cares for her daily and it has certainly taken a toll on him, emotionally and physically. Nevertheless, Scott and I talked about how he demonstrates daily his marriage covenant. Because our visits are not near as often as we would both like, which in one way is ridiculous, I decided to take a bunch of pictures.
inside the barn....can you believe the organization! The loops behind Scott are all chainsaw chains.
This wood pile is usually halfway up the barn and until just a few years ago Grandpa
hand split all of the logs with an ax.
Grandpa hand planted all of these trees, actually every single tree on the property he has planted, but he planted these all this past spring. There are at least 30 of them.
Grandpa's ride! With an incredible lift on the back to help him haul his firewood!
This house is solid marble. Scott's great-grandpa McCalb built this house. I am thinking that all the lumber used is oak and came from the family's property.
Yes....more trees...still waiting to be planted.
I love this windmill in the front yard.
What a He-Man! :) Hahahaha!
See that tool right on top. Grandpa uses this tool to trim the grass BY HAND around ALL of his trees.
Again...organized!!
All of the milk jugs made me smile....
Organized!
Organized!
Organized!
Organized!
This is Grandpa's "desk" area in the Living Room. Organized!
These are taped to the table. Notice the Serenity Prayer. I was deeply touched by Grandpa's faithfulness, to his wife and to his Maker.
These are CD's from Grandpa's church and campmeeting. Each week he is given the CD and he listens to it. One of the first times I had spent any time with Grandpa he said one of the most important things a person should do when they age is to keep the mind thinking. He is so physically active and keeps his mind thinking. He is truly one of the most amazing people I know.
How cute! These were on his clipboard.
Grandpa and Scott were looking at the catalog where he orders all of his trees.
Scott gets his love of trees honestly.
How about that vintage kitchen!
Priceless! He is priceless!!
We took over all the makings for homemade pizza. My pan barely fit in the little vintagey oven they have. Grandpa loved it and laughed because it took him so long to eat due to missing teeth. :) Grandma didn't recognize us at all. She looked great though considering. Grandpa and Grandma were impeccably clean given their age and the situation. When Scott and I were outside the girls came running out to us. Kate said, "Mom and Dad. Grandpa told Grandma to eat. She said No I don't know these people. Grandpa told her Oh Yes you do!" It was sad but cute at the same time. I can just imagine the exchange. I didn't take any pictures of Grandma to respect her privacy. These are incredible Godly Americans, who believe in Christ, personal responsibility, and the sacredness of the marriage covenant. What a great heritage!
